"The Ditch Blind"
by Doug Wigfield (Co-Founder)

You want to match the relative color of the interior of the ditch so take a look under different light conditions and/or, better yet, take photos. After doing this your chore is to find the right camo pattern to match it, and with all the patterns on the market now, you shouldn't have any trouble. You can purchase solid material, die cut or leaf cut. I personally like the leaf or die cut as it softens the hard lines and allows airflow which is important in high winds. A flapping blind can frighten the wary black bandits. This material is light in weight and is easy to carry if you can’t drive your truck to your blind sight.

Another consideration is the width and height of the material to purchase. Consider how many people you normally have hunt with you. Spread a rope out on the ground as a template to ascertain the right length. Keep it as small as you can without cramping your shooting space. You’ll want to be comfortable and have enough space for your shooting bag which holds are the necessaries i.e. shells, calls thermos, gloves, face mask etc, etc.

I use 8 ft. plastic tomato stakes as uprights to attach the blind material to. Length determines how many you should use. I use six for a two person blind. They have sharp ends on one end that can easily be shoved down into the usually muddy, wet bottom. I suggest using a piece of 1/2 inch plywood under you to place your stool on and stand on when shooting. I cut a handhold in mine for easy portage. Go ahead and spray paint it a dark brown and/or green so it doesn’t stick out to overhead birds.

There ya go. A light weight blind that can be folded or rolled up into a manageable bundle. This blind design has proved itself effective many times over. All of this is to no avail if you are not totally camoed including a facemask and gloves and remain motionless until rising to shoot.

Good luck and good shooting!
