"The Scavenger Setup"
by Adam Watkowski

road killI just thought that I might pass something on to those who would like to try something different. We are coming into the end of the crow hunting season in many of parts of the country now. The survivors of the roost are super smart and very cautious this time of the year. I found a little trick that keeps your barrel hot for those high flyers. Try placing a fox, coyote, coon or rabbit hide out in the middle of a field with 1 to 3 crow decoys around it. There are two ways that make this set up work. You could either place all the decoys up close to the hide or place one decoy next to the hide and take the others and place them on the outside edge. About 10 to 15 yards from the hide.

The first set up mentioned will simulate a small group of crows feeding on a lost kill. Greeting calls and some crow fight calls work well with this set up. In coming crows think of free eats and they want theirs too.

The second set up mentioned will simulate an injured crow about to be finished off by a predator. The one to two birds placed out on the edge act as distracters to the predator. A crow in distress call works in this situation. Crows respond very well to both set ups and you can change the set up from feeding to distress from one calling sight to the next. It keeps them off guard and produces results on those high flyers.

The most important part of these set ups is to move around from one set up to the next. So give it a try and I think you will be putting this little trick in your set ups for years to come.
